Note on the problems and benefits of Homelessness

While it is not ideal to be sleeping on the streets, for many people, it is the best option that they have.
Some have no other place to sleep, some have other options but the street is the best option for them. For these latter, some prefer the freedom of the street. Freedom from unpleasant circumstances or "other people" which they might encounter when they stay in houses or rooming houses.
Spending a few nights in Summer on Swanston street  is not unpleasant and might be like camping out.
Even people who live in houses can be homeless because a house is not a home if you do not live with people you Love. People who live alone are homeless.
People are homeless because they are not Loved.

Almost all, who are homeless, have mental health issues. Being homeless is sad which leads to depression, anger and resentment and anti-social behaviour.
Depression is an illness which can cause paucity of thought, memory and physically feeling unwell.
Drugs are a contributing factor for many homeless people. Some have ongoing drug use. Some have drug use in the past which they are trying to recover from. Being released from drug rehabilitation facilities sometimes means that these people are suddenly without shelter because they have lost their other social supports due to their past exploits.
Drug use is however not the root cause. Circumstances from the users past, which in many cases, are not in conscious memory, may be the driver for drug use. Unresolved disease or unease drives people to seek self medication.
Eg. Coffee, alcohol and tobacco are stimulants which many in our society use to treat depression. They are medications or drugs which are commonly used and socially accepted.

It is the role of society to help each member of society live as well as possible. Society is one big "family" and as a family we all influence each other. Seeing homeless people on the street begging makes us sad and they are sad to see us walk by and not engage or say hello. We are all made homeless because our streets are part of our home and we do not feel happy when we are in our streets or in our minds.
People are sensitive. Every little thing we do to each other, eg. shout, frown, let bystanders over hear our negativity, our violence, effects people badly. It is these life experiences, be they slight or in passing, which could lead to bad outcomes down the line, and for other people.

Editorial:
While some who end up on the streets are people who have made the wrong choices in life, some people become homeless because of circumstances beyond their ken.
A lesson from the Bible; as the Syro-Phoenecian woman showed Jesus; every one is worth saving; "...even the dogs under the table eat the childrens' scraps." (Mark 7:28)
